I was so impressed when I saw this poster. Not just because I liked design but because ‘We Were Promised Jetpacks’ are a band i’ve been listening to and following since they were first beginning. It was a nice surprise when I saw it appear on my tumblr feed. It’s also good to see that they are getting some quality poster designs done for them too.

I saw this fascinating print on ffffound a couple of months ago but never found out who produced it as there was no information. Fortunately for me it reappeared on shell suit zombie today and i found out it was by a recent graduate from Notts Trent called Luke Elliot.

Interestingly this project was also about creating something beautiful out of someone else’s waste.

After analysing sagmeisters technique i have identified where his method may not be right for me. Here the objects have been broken up/taken apart and re-arranged to create the typeface. As i am visually intending to show people the benefits of Freecycling, altering the form could give off the wrong message as these items would appear to be in un-working order.

I picked out these two typographic experments over the hundreds of others as these both are made up of furniture and general house hold objects, similar to the the items being given away everyday on freecycle.

So my idea is pushing more towards the sagmester-esc hand hewn...

So my idea is pushing more towards the sagmester-esc hand hewn typography. I also feel it is important to show the collected objects in fully functional order to emphasise the benefits of freecycling. For example an electrical item should be ‘on’ to display it’s purpose. A light or tv set could be a really interesting element of the design. Also manual functioning objects could be animated in there own way too. A hoover hose could be stretched out and formed into shapes. The drawer from a cabinet could be pulled out and placed in other areas of the design to help with the over construction of the typography.

My tutor directed me to this work called ‘I love New York’ by Christopher Niemann as a way to visualise how the shapes and sizes of gathered objects could fit together.

This design is slightly larger then the ones previously shown so I could get a clearer understanding of the way these sculptures ar built. As this design was photographed from straight on, I have been highlighting parts where the objects used started to create shapes and letter forms. This technique could be used to display a message within my design.

I discovered these sculptures on my hardrive that I had collected from ‘ffffound’ at some point last year. Not only are they absolutely bloody marvelous but they are the perfect example for my freecycle concept. After analysing my tape experiments I realised that to go forward with this idea I need to make sure I am including mixture of objects to show the audience that there is a whole range of items on offer.

After looking back at my research I had done on desirable objects, it thought that incorporating the element of gold could strengthen my message.

“One mans rubbish is another mans GOLD”

Spray paint?

No!

I think If I started spraying the items gold they would end up looking the total opposite of desirable.

I have been playing off the famous saying ‘one mans junk is another mans gold’ and thinking of different ways to make undesirable objects desirable.

I have also been thinking about the kinds of materials I could use to portray the right message. Recently I have been experimenting with old cassette tapes that I picked up in bulk on freecycle. I have been creating symbols and typefaces that could be used to spell out my vision for 2011.

After looking back at the work I have realised that the choice of material could give people the wrong idea. For example a cassette tape could quite easily be stating something about the analog culture or audio technology.

Here is a photograph from an exhibition I saw at the guggenheim in New York. The Piece was called “The Death of James Lee Byers” and used gold leaf to cover the entire exhibition space. Gold is a material that is desired by many human beings and links perfectly to my recent research.
